Barcelona Players Refusing To Take A Pay Cut Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Barcelona chiefs are currently facing a battle with their players after it emerged some of them have rejected pleas to take a pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Negotiations between the club’s hierarchy are reportedly underway but ESPN have reported both parties are at a crossroads.

The issue is currently mooted as Barca’s players being unhappy with terms suggested by the board so far, but they are open to taking a hit on their pay packet.

Spanish publication Diario Sport per Daily Mail reported on Thursday that the differences currently hang on the amount players should lose out on due to the season stopping with three months left.

The Catalan giants have a giant wage bill and are set to be hit hard over the next few months due to football’s suspension worldwide.

Their whole squad combined reportedly earn €500 million annually between themselves resulting in a huge outgoing for the club.

Barcelona are also being hit massively by a lack of revenue on match-day as well as side activities such as the club museum being closed.

In a video conference meeting last Friday, player wages being cut was broached and both parties have reportedly been in huge discussion among themselves since.

Barcelona could still apply the wage cut even if the players refuse to agree to it due to Spain’s State of Emergency laws.

One man who likely wouldn’t be against the pay cut is star striker Lionel Messi.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Barca captain Messi had donated a huge €1 million sum to help combat the current pandemic.

A clinic confirmed that the 32-year-old had donated €500,000 to them as well as the same amount to a medical facility in his native Argentina.

Ronaldo has been back in his homeland since the Serie A season was suspended earlier this month and is has begun the process of helping out.

Spanish publication AS have revealed that the 35-year-old’s agent Mendes has begun the process of buying medical supplies for Sao Joao hospital in Porto, which Ronaldo is also contributing to.
